I am curious on why the Titans have never went out and got a superstar player at any position, at least for any amount of time. Now I am not a guru when it comes to cap money, so pardon my ignorance if this is a stupid question.

It seems that some say it is Reinfeldt, but this has been going on since the Oiler's moved to Tennessee. Every star that they have ever had they picked up was from the draft. Now I am a HUGE CJ fan, (and was before he made his mark and everybody jumped on board), but the last great ones that I can remember out of the Titan's draft that are still here are Bulluck, Kearse, Bironas, Finnegan (Ttians), CJ (Titans).

Then I think about all the draft bust. Pacman, Woolfolk, Troupe, Calico, Pickens, Young (so far). I am sure I left some off.

So what are your thoughts on why we don't go after superstars like Boldin, Moss, TO, over the years? They seem to produce for the teams they went to. Is it Bud Adams, Fisher, any GM we bring on? Don't say small market. The Jags just signed Holt and they don't sell out like we do. (I am a PSL holder). I remeber people screaming about this on the TOMB, I cannot see it being much different here.

Just looking for some thoughts. :hmm:

It's just the way this team operates. Hard to argue with quickness of the team's turnaround after the brief downturn and it's hard to argue with 13-3. Some teams (yes - esp small market) languish for a decade at that point.
None of the big FA's mentioned have won a Super Bowl with their new team.

PS: Pickens wasn't drafted by Tennessee..

Specifically about WRs, I don't think any big names want to come here. So if we are ever going to land a big name, we are going to have to overpay. Our front office seems unwilling to do that. So that makes an impossible situation without one side giving in a little. I kind of figured since we were such a good team, that players like Holt looking for a title before a payday would be interested in us.

Another reason the Titans haven't been big free agent spenders since they got here was the major salary cap purge. We really weren't in a position to sign any big name free agents for awhile. We had success building in the draft, so we've used a lot of our funds towards re-signing the players we chose to keep.

These arguments get brought up again and again, so I will just debunk a few of them.

#1 - The Titans are so cheap! They never go after the top free agents!

The Titans spend money wisely. Most free agent aquisitions make little or no difference for their team. Many of them are signed just because GMs want to make a big splash and pump up their own egos. Yes, the Jags signed Holt for a lot of money. So what? They have no offensive line. The Titans spend money, but not always on the "prestige" positions like WR. I, for one, would way rather have the Titans spending their cap money to lock up guys like Michael Roos and David Stewart than some guy who makes a few nice catches that get him on SportsCenter.

#2 - The Titans have so many draft busts! Woolfolk, Calico, Pacman, Vince, Paul Williams!

Every team has tons of draft busts. I haven't crunched the numbers, but I bet the Titans do better in the draft than most teams.

Why are we leaving out 2nd round pick Chris Henry from the draft bust list? Is the jury still out on him? lol

Honestly, I forget Chris Henry existed. I think I repressed all memories of him.

To bad he gets paid to produce on field and not in the weight room. If that was the case he'd probably be one of the highest paid players in the NFL..<a href="http://www.smileyvault.com/" title="Weight Lifting Smiley"><img src="http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/character/smiley-vault-character-027.gif" border="0" alt="Weight Lifting Smiley" title="Weight Lifting Smiley" /></a>

Here's my take on Coach Fisher (in gearhead/performance enthusiasts terms)....

If JF was a tuner enthusiast/racer, he'd be the type to worry mostly about brakes and suspension/handling, but would put power way down at the bottom of the list.
Now, Fisher might have a race car that would hug a curve like a crackwhore on a glass pipe, but he'd get passed (and stay passed) on the straightaways because he doesn't care enough about power to keep up with the rest of the cars. What he doesn't realize is that while 'braking and handling' are two core components of car peformance, it's a moot point when you don't have the power to keep up with everyone. And today's NFL is about speed. The passing game has evolved into a precision strategy for most teams. Sometimes I wonder if JF realizes this.

So until JF learns how to install a turbo, bigger engine or other engine mods to his race car, he might start out quick but will quickly get left behind.

That's Nascar thinking, F1 and IRL are more about precision and technique. But then again, we are in Sprint Cup territory. :grrhee:
