When big defensive end Ropati Pitoitua broke his hand last week, it opened up a big opportunity for rookie LaVar Edwards.

Edwards, the team’s fifth-round pick out of LSU, is expected to start against the Falcons on Saturday night in the team’s third preseason game at LP Field. He worked with the first team in practices throughout the week.

“It is really exciting, a dream come true,’’ Edwards said. “It’s my first NFL start, so I want to make sure I take advantage of it. I don’t want to let my teammates down, and I want to prove I deserve to be in there.”

Edwards has played both inside and outside on the defensive line over the first two weeks of the preseason, and he has four tackles and a sack in the two games combined.

Pitoitua won’t play on Saturday after surgery this week, although he’s expected to be ready for the regular season opener.

Titans coach Mike Munchak said he’s seen improvement from Edwards.

“He’s been getting better,’’ Munchak said. “He’s been getting a lot of reps in games, and he has improved the more he’s played.”
