Free agent safety George Wilson liked what he saw – and heard — from the Titans during his visit earlier this week.

He could see himself playing for the team in 2013, in fact, after spending time with defensive coordinator Jerry Gray and senior assistant Gregg Williams, along with head coach Mike Munchak.

“I definitely think it is a good fit with everything Jerry Gray and Coach Williams envisions for the defense next season,’’ Wilson said. “They want to take the defense a step further by adding some veteran leadership and depth at positions and they certainly expressed a desire to have me as a piece of their puzzle.

“They made it quite clear what they are looking for from me, and I think I fit the bill for what they are looking for as well.”

Wilson, who spent the past eight years with the Buffalo Bills, isn’t quite ready to make a decision yet, however.

Wilson visited the Lions on Thursday, one day after visiting the Titans. He expects his agents to talk with other teams at the NFL Combine next week in Indianapolis.

“I certainly don’t want to make a decision before I know what all my options are. This is my first time to experience free agency,’’ said Wilson, who was released by Buffalo on Monday. Wilson is from Paducah, Ky., and he played football at Arkansas, where he was teammates with Titans offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains.

“I am very pleased with my visits so far, but Tennessee is close to home. I have a lot of family in the Nashville area close to Paducah,’’ he said. “I am not going to rush it, but I would definitely like to make a decision so I can find a home.”

Wilson said he likes Gray, and his vision for the defense. He played under Gray when he was defensive coordinator in Buffalo. The Titans are looking for more consistency at the position opposite Michael Griffin.

“Jerry had an opportunity to see me grind and work day in and day out and he has followed my career,’’ said Wilson, a five-time captain in Buffalo who has totaled 412 tackles and 12 tackles during his career.

“He said as soon as he saw me hit the waiver wire on Monday he went right to the main man and requested that they at least take a look at me. I had a great visit with everybody in Tennessee, and an opportunity to sit down with Gregg Williams and talk about his vision for the Tennessee Titans defense next season and what his mindset was, and I had a great sit down with coach Munchak and him giving me an expectation of me would be and what type of environment and culture he tries to set around the facility.

    “Everything was definitely very positive.”

It's funny to me that Wilson and Loggains were teammates back in the day.

    I think he picks us.

    1. Gray connection
    2. Family close to Nashville
    3. "Looking for a home"

It all kinda adds up, Wilson is on his last few years of playing in the NFL and he's already familiar with Gray's system and has family close to Nashville so he could just retire after his contract ends and live around the area. Unless someone offers a bit more money and convincing I think we got him.

I would be totally fine with this signing, given we sign him to a short 2-3 year deal and we still go after a safety (SS/FS) pretty high in the draft. He IS still playing at a very high level and would immediately upgrade our secondary, both talent wise and provide leadership. He starts for us 1 to 2 years and we transition him out.

    Now for what will happen....
We will sign him to a 4 year deal (age 36). We won't address the safety position any further this year and we will be addressing it again after next season when Griffin is cut.

He'll sign with us. He sounds like a college recruit who was wowed by his on campus visit. Unless someone breaks the bank for him, he's ours. Not sure how I feel about this move. I had my heart set on a higher profile move than this but who knows, it might be what we need. I'm definitely not all that excited about this.

Like I said in the other thread... He'd like Nashville a lot more than Buffalo.

Most players like living here (or nearby in Franklin or Brentwood).

Hope we get him, but I won't be bummed if we don't. Either way, we need to take a safety no later than the 3rd round.

griffin better be cut after next year. If we don't draft one this year in the first 5 rounds, that means the worst thing ever, Griffin will likely be back in 2014 with the 3rd highest contract of all safetys.
