I disagree. CJ really has no choice because the system is screwed up. It is especially hard on RBs. Qbs have time to prove themselves because they can play another decade after their rookie contract is ended. RBs have only a few real productive years after their rookie contracts and more and more teams have refused to pay huge contracts to RBs past 26 years of age because they know they could hit the wall at any time. Too many examples of teams getting burned shortly after paying out on a RB including the Titans with EG.

I think there needs to be a rookie salary chart that pegs what rookies make for the first 4 years they are in the league based on where they are drafted. The salaries could escalate each year but not in an outrageous way. Then there could be automatic bonuses paid for guys who hit certain benchmarks like % play as a starter, 1000 yard rushers, pro-bowl and such which would reward the better players while not rewarding guys who don't do squat (like Russel) but get paid a boat load of money now from day one. This gets rookies into camp from day one.

It would protect teams form having to pay out huge amounts for busts or guys who stay injured but also the bonus structure could pay out substantially to guys who produce (a RB getting 2000 yards could get 4 mil or something). Heck the bonus system wouldn't even have to count against the CAP since there is no way to predict the outcome and you wouldn't want teams stopping guys from reaching those milestones to keep from going over the CAP.

Also, right now there is no middle ground. There is no doubt CJ is under paid. The scheme presented in the article looks like a real nice compromise. CJ could play under that contract for a few years with a mutual understanding he would get another new contract if he continues to play at his high level. Both sides win in that compromise because the Titans aren't risking as much and CJ isn't risking his career to injury playing for peanuts. At worst for CJ he gets some kind of payday.
