One of the best culinary inventions ever! And right here in our area of the country. Hot chicken in Nashville is a bit like wings in Buffalo. It seems like something that should have been invented in New Orleans instead. Glad this is ours!

The only problem with hot chicken is that it is like crack, meth and heroin combined. You can't stop wanting it and thinking about it.

I work a half shift on Saturdays and while driving home i thought i would stop and get some Popeyes. I exit from 40 onto Jefferson and as always kept my eye out for new restaurants, especially new BBQ. There it was in the strip mall across from Fisk. Helen's hot chicken! So much for Popeyes.

    Home - Helen's Hot Chicken

The place is great! They not only have hot chicken but hot fish! Unlike some hot chicken places they have choices that are not hot as hell so it is great for kids. I got mild for my son and wife, hot for me. Maybe next time i'll try hellhot! The place was nice, friendly and clean and the food was great and the prices were almost unfair to them!

My son is off school on Monday so we will be back.

I have also tried the KFC hot chicken and liked that. Not as much but it is good. Mild of course with plenty of delicious sauce to dip your biscuit in.

KFC was pretty disappointing. I don't know how I feel about hot fish.....

Never had any from Nashville, but Uncle Lou's in Memphis is straight ****ing awesome.

If you find yourself in Memphis, its worth a stop.

Helens is the 2nd real hot chicken place i have tried in Nashville. The other is Hattie B's on charlotte. I went to Princes once after work but the wait was too long so i never ate their chicken.

I would still rate Hattie B's a tiny bit better because of their sides. Like the pimento mac n cheese. You can also get beer there.

It's about location for me. Is it near an area we normally visit when we come to town or is it not too far out of the way on my drive home from work? We go to the farmers market often in sumer and Helen's is only a mile from there and it is reasonable as a stop on my way home.

I heard about that place on the food network show best thing i ever ate. It sure looked good. That corruption sauce qualifies it as a hot chicken.

I've only recently heard of Nashville being the home of hot chicken.

What qualifies as hot chicken? Is it sauce like wings or regular chicken with spices like Popeye's?

I thought Popeye's claimed hot chicken is from Louisiana... Lol

REAL Nashville hot chicken is a lard-based "paste" with a **** ton of cayenne that is applied to the chicken after it is cooked. The "Nashville hot chicken" you see at KFC and various other chains don't even get the concept right. They are simply cashing in on the name.
