The issue is his head ended up making contact with him the same time as his shoulder and forearms and rose above the neck. I don't know if the hit is illegal if the helmet doesn't rise up.

If this block would have been legal on any other of the 10 players on the field, then punters should not be allowed to go after the returner. I'm all for protection as they are in the act of punting but, once the punter moves towards the returner, he's fair game, IMO.

Did the punter have a helmet on? Was the chinstrap buckled? Mouth piece in? If so, its a fantastic hit by the defender.

Yeah, it "ended up" making contact with the head/neck area, but clearly wasn't the intent. FFS NFL, it's an extremely fast-paced sport.

Exactly. If the punter is going to be allowed to "go after" the runner and potentially stop the play then he should be treated just like the other 10 guys.

Yeah I think this type of stuff is starting to ruin the game. What's worse is now that everyone is going low, we see more knee ACL/MCL injuries.

I'm not defending the wussification of the NFL—just translating what the article said. Results are all that matter under the rule. I'm sure there'd be no fine if he'd bent his knee backwards as long as it wasn't helmet first.

I like GoT's idea of the pink tutu.

I didn't think you were defending it. I agree with everything you've said in this thread.

Punters are always considered "defenseless players". A stupid rule.

The guy leans down, and launches upwards, burying his helmet into the neck/head area. Illegal hit. Helmet to the facemask.

Itll be a fine and should have been a flag. There is no questioning this in any way.

Watch that gif again. The guy had his hands pulled into his chest, hit him with his helmet, then pushed off (extending his arms). He led with his helmet, just look at the positioning of his body when he made the hit.

thats a text book block, its called leverage. if he did anything else, he would of been accused of 'lacking effort'.

It should have been a penalty in todays NFL, but a fine is ludacris.
