Although Leinart has had his share of well-documented issues off the field within the past year, his work ethic and attitude since being benched has, by all accounts, remained strong. So does the possibility that he will return to the starting role at some point before the season is over.

In the meantime, there are many in league circles who believe Leinart and the Cardinals are far from a perfect match.

Said one league source: “Ken Whisenhunt is a no-nonsense, East Coast coach. He’s a gritty guy. Leinart is all things Hollywood. It’s a really bad fit. Warner is much more of a Whisenhunt type of guy — came undrafted, had to work for everything and still works as hard as anyone.

“The Cardinals’ front office wanted to draft Jay Cutler. They had him graded higher on their draft board. The owners stepped in — with the new stadium they were building — and made the pick to sell seats.

“The problem with owners — they don’t get it. A player’s high profile does not make him great. W’s sell tickets.”
