The Titans passed on former Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler in the 2006 NFL Draft. They selected Vince Young, of course, third overall instead.

Cutler wasn’t surprised. The Broncos picked him 11th overall.

“I think they were pretty set on Vince,’’ Cutler said in a conference call on Wednesday. “I think (Titans owner) Bud Adams was pretty much going to go with him. I went over there and threw a few times for them, but I think it was for show really. I would have liked to have stayed there, but I ended up in a great situation with Mike Shanahan in Denver and on to Chicago. It’s been a fun career so far.”

Cutler returns to Nashville on Sunday with the Bears. This season he’s already thrown for 1,545 yards and nine touchdowns, along with eight interceptions. Two other former Commodores — wide receiver Earl Bennett and cornerback D.J. Moore — also play for the Bears.

“It is going to be fun,’’ Cutler said. “I haven’t played there in a while, to get back to Nashville and see some people I haven’t seen in a while, it’s going to be a good time.”

Cutler, in his seventh NFL season, has turned out to be the best of the three quarterbacks in the first round of the 2006 draft.

Young currently is out of the league after playing from 2006-2010 with the Titans. He played one season as a backup with the Eagles. The Bills released him prior to this season.

Former Southern Cal quarterback Matt Leinart, who was selected 10th overall, by the Cardinals, is now Carson Palmer’s backup with the Raiders. He spent four seasons with the Cardinals, but never established himself as a starter. He spent a year as a backup with the Texans in 2011.

Cutler doesn’t necessarily take pride in the fact he’s proven to be the best of the bunch, however.

“I don’t really think about it,’’ Cutler said. “The draft and drafting quarterbacks in the first round, it is such a crap shoot and once you get into the NFL there is a lot to it. It is not whether you just play well. You have to be in a good system and you have to have some guys around you, your offensive line has to play well. It’s a lot of chance and a lot of luck as well as your skill level.”

I'm glad neither one of the three qbs taken that year is our qb!

Same here. Do not give us that "We passed on Cutler" crap. Sure he worked out better than Vince and Leinart. Being the best of that group though is like bragging about being the smartest kid with down syndrome.

I would take either Hass or Locker over Cutler.

One could argue that Vince was better for us then Cutler was for the broncos.

Honestly if Vince didnt just lose it mentally and emotionally on fisher then he would prolly still be our qb. I mean we were 5-3 that season when he was pretty much babied by fisher and he flipped out and then was put on IR

Cutler is holding the Bears back. They would be the best team in the league if they had even an average QB. Look at San Fran. Instead they are stuck with Cutler. Story of Lovie Smith's career. Bears would have been amazing a few years back were it not for Rex Grossman.

I'm left to wonder where the Titans would be if Cutler was our QB. All those years wasted on KC, VY, and arguably Hasselbeck... could we have actually done something? Hard telling - so lez move on!

He will throw 3 picks and they'll probably still win. I bet Griffin gets another one.
