While in the NAVY I did a lot of diving (my roommate was a NAVY diver so...) while I was stationed in CUBA. I have never been more scared, and I mean scared to the point of probably being a danger to myself than night diving. You have a light, a strong beam that reaches outward , but it only goes maybe 20 feet. In every other direction it is total blackness, I mean nothing, especially on a moonless night. There you are swimming along, not really sure of exactly where you are and then something crosses in front of the beam of light in a flash and then it's gone. Your imagination goes crazy thinking about what is just outside that beam of light.

I have felt the smallest I ever have when I was deployed on the 15th MEU. Out in the middle of nowhere I would often go up top and just look around. I have never in my life, seen anything so dark. All the ships lights are off, thousands of miles away from shore and often times no stars. Scary, but humbling at the same time.

Sometimes, when you don't have cloud cover, you could see nebulas and other things like that in space. Simply amazing.

We are the top of the food chain...except in the ocean or in the wilderness of course. LOL Then not so much.
