Most athletes actually do gain a lot of weight when they stop playing. The calorie burning comes to an end. But the eating does not. 30 lbs in a year is nothing. Especially to a fit athlete. Luckily you can lose it just as fast. Two good examples are Michael Jordan and Magic johnson. They got heavy fast.

I'm a college wrestler. And 30 pounds since the end of the season isn't trying to gain it. I wrestle 125, but our 133 pounder at the beginning of the season gained 27 pounds in 24 hours. He just ate non-stop after one of our matches. He said he couldn't sleep because it felt like his stomach was ripping apart. He was our 157 pounder at the end of the year by the way.

Sorry I forgot what this thread was about. White weighed 250 in the national championship game, and he played good enough for me there. Let him play at 250.

except we arent talking about one game where you have an entire month to gain or lose weight before you play it, we're talking about a 16+ game season. even the fit guys have trouble staying healthy.

That's not the issue for one game. The problem is conditioning and health and durability aren't adaquete for a full 16 game seaon (plus playoffs hopefully); being overweight and having to endure so much physical strain and trauma for that long a time, that heavy, is not only grossly un-healthy, his performance will be terrible by mid-season.
