Marc Mariani hasn’t played a down of regular-season football in almost two years, but with every mistake the Titans make in the return game, his value seems to be increasing.

His contract runs out after this season, but it sounds like he’s still in the team’s plans for the future.

That’s no surprise, given the slew of bad decisions and turnovers that have plagued the return game. The latest hiccup occurred in Thursday’s loss to Indianapolis, when new return man Devon Wylie fumbled a kick return early in the second half. The Colts recovered and went on to score a touchdown.

“He is definitely a guy we want to be part of this organization,” coach Mike Munchak said Friday of Mariani, who made the Pro Bowl as a rookie in 2010. “When you go through periods like we’re going through, inconsistency at the position, you realize the value — even more — of someone who has been consistent when he’s had the opportunities.”

Munchak said he had no regrets about placing Mariani, who suffered a shoulder injury in the preseason, on injured reserve.

The Titans had a couple other options — keep him on the 53-man roster and waiting until he was healthy, or placing him on injured reserve/recall and activating him after eight weeks.

Teams are only allowed to use injured reserve/recall on one player per year, however.

“For me at the time, and even now, he wasn’t healthy enough to be the answer,” Munchak said. “So it wouldn’t have mattered.”

Mariani, who missed all of 2012 after breaking a leg in the preseason, said he’s already looking forward to next year if he can get a new contract.

“Things are going really well and I feel really good,” Mariani said. “I have every intention of playing here. This is the organization I want to play for. That’s my focus and I’m excited about it. I think things will fall into place.”

He has to be all healed by now, why dont we just dress him as Wylie? Think about it.

I tried to tell the Reynaud fans last year that we would learn the value of a guy who just makes good decisions.
