Matt Simms a play away with Jets

First-round pick Geno Smith started the first three games of the season for the Jets, and he’ll be the starter in Sunday’s game against the Titans.

He’s thrown for 801 yards and three touchdowns, along with six interceptions.

If something happens to Smith, however, a familiar face will enter the game – former University of Tennessee quarterback Matt Simms.

After an impressive preseason, Simms is the No. 2 quarterback. A shoulder injury to Mark Sanchez bumped Simms up the depth chart.

“He’s done very well,’’ Jets coach Rex Ryan said on Wednesday during a conference call with Nashville reporters. “People there know — he’s got a huge arm. But, he’s really taken off with the coaching here, and he’s really taken to it.”

Former Vanderbilt quarterback David Lee is the Jets quarterback coach and Marty Mornhinweg is the offensive coordinator.

“We’re very fortunate to have him; he’s a great fundamental teacher of the game,’’ Ryan said of Lee. “Then Marty … has done a great job with him. Simms … had a tremendous preseason for us. Guys really like him, and he really earned his spot on the team.”
