The Titans defense appears at this point as if it will get a big boost this weekend with the return of starting middle linebacker Colin McCarthy.

McCarthy missed the last three games with what he said Wednesday was a high ankle sprain. But he returned for limited practice on Wednesday and said afterward that, barring a significant setback, “I’m good to go” for the Minnesota contest.

“It felt good out there,” McCarthy said. “I did individual (drills), did all the team periods, so we’ll see what progress there is tomorrow and see how it feels. But again, I’m just happy to be out there, to get the defense going and be ready for Sunday.”

Titans coach Mike Munchak also said that barring a setback, he expects McCarthy to see a lot of action against the Vikings.

That’s good news for a Titans defense that’s second-to-last in the league overall, last in first downs allowed and tied for second-to-last in turnover ratio.

“I don’t know (what’s wrong with the defense) – I really can’t tell you,” McCarthy said. “We haven’t been getting turnovers the way we usually get them. Third downs are key for us, too. We have to be able to get off the field.”

McCarthy, one of two defensive captains, also hopes to bring more stability to the Titans on that side of the ball.

“I’m the middle linebacker – I’ve got to get everybody lined up, and me not being there causes confusion,” McCarthy said. “I think today with me being out there, guys felt more comfortable, happy to have me back. I’m happy to be back, just preparing and getting ready for Sunday.”

If the run game can get going again we've got a shot at winning this one.

Yeah I actually think we have a better shot at this one than most people are giving us. The Vikes are playing some good football right now but I'm just not buying them as an elite team. They will be brought back down to Earth soon.

They should consider switching up McCarthy and Akeem Ayres on D. They need to stop pretending Akeen is going to be the second coming of Demarcus Ware. He would be better in the middle where his consistancy would be a strength and his lack of speed will be less of a liability.
