There has been a lot of talk about taking a mid or late round QB to "Groom" for the future. Seeing players like Tom Brady or even Tony Romo gets us all excited thinking we can possibly get the same. Well, let us take a look at where current starting QBs were drafted:

    19 from 1st round
    5 from 2nd round -- Mostly high in 2nd
5 from 3rd round -- including Terrell Pryor
3 from from later -- one 6th, one 7th and one UFA

Now let us take a look at how many QBs have been drafted in each round. Going back to 1998:
    Round Count of RD
    1 43
    2 17
    3 20
    4 14
    5 27
    6 30
    7 31

Most mid and late round QBs are out of the league within 4 years having done next to nothing. For each round how many drafted QBs ended up being, at the very least, a decent backup for more than a couple years.

4th round (6 out of 14): Kirk Cousins, Aaron Brooks, David Garrard, Seneca Wallace, Luke McCown, Kyle Orton
5th round (2 out of 27): Dan Orlovski and Troy Smith
6th round (5 out of 30): Matt Hasselbeck, Tom Brady, Marc Bulger, Derek Anderson, Bruce Gradkowski (Some of you might want to include Rusty Smith in here :troll: )
7th round (2 out of 31): Ryan Fitzpatrick and Matt Cassel

In the 4th round and later 15 QBs have been decent while 87 have been useless. That is about 3 out of every 20. Out of that only two, Tom Brady and Matt Hasselbeck could be considered stars. Those two plus Aaron Brooks and Marc Bulger are the only QBs who were starters for any meaningful length of time. Kurt Warner and Tony Romo are the only undrafted QBs to be stars.

    Conclusion:

If you are hoping for future starter out of a QB drafted after the third you are playing really low odds. If you want a future starter we need to go 1st or high 2nd to have a realistic shot.

I agree but its tough to really use numbers. If you draft a qb in the 1st you are pretty much forced to stick with him for three years
Plus guys like alex smith aren't even on the same team
VY was a bust but we stuck with him

Mettenberger fits the mould of a pocket-passer that Whiz likes.

I think this will be one of those years when we look back on it in five years and say, "man, that QB class was awful."

    2006 all over again.
