I'm not a massively deep poetry fan, but just enjoy good poems such as the Raven by Poe hence why I really like this film. Granted the poem itself has little bearing on the film if only to sell the films name and have a couple of scenes with Ravens picking at the bodies of those who are since deceased.

The film naturally being based around his tales such as tell tale heart which very few have read but his literary prowess is something all should see. Whilst I haven't read nearly enough of his Tales, i've read enough to know that everyone should be a fan.

Went and saw the new Hobbit.

It was pretty good. I liked what they added to the story to bridge it with LOTRs and even better is that they are intertwining the two stories into one.

Smaug was amazing. Well designed and didn't look like obvious CGI. They could have cut off the last 30 minutes though, everyone knows it wasn't going to work.

Also seeing in it Malaysia, the subtitles were in Malay and Chinese, even the Orcs and Elvish-speak so I had no idea what they were saying.

I thought so too. Of course I went into it with the lowest of expectations. I think people are generally too hard on comedy movies. IMO comedies should be judged a bit differently than a dramatic work. I'm much more forgiving of things like plot holes and unrealistic moments. The #1 goal of a comedy is to be funny. If it accomplishes that then it did its job in my book.

As for Hill, I don't think he's awful but I do think he can wear on you after awhile. And I agree he's not exactly the most talented guy around. But really you could say the same thing about many people in Hollywood.

I agree about a lot of this, but the movie just was missing something for me. I can't quite tell.. I guess maybe the main dwarf characters are lame. And you have no fear for the characters, because you aren't really attached (besides Gandalf and Bilbo). Plus, you know that none of them are going to be killed in this movie. Smaug's visuals were definitely good, and intimidating.

Overall, I enjoyed it over most other movies I've seen this year, but I didn't like it as much as the first. The Orlando Bloom/elf girl/Dwarf love triangle is a little bit too much for me as well. IMO, if you have to add a substantial storyline, as well as injecting a couple new (or LOTR) characters in to make it palatable, then you might not have enough meat there to make 3 whole movies out of it, but it seems that they're stretching as much as they can to make it the trilogy. Seems like they left a lot of waste into the movie. Could have easily made it 2 hours and did everything they needed to do.

There was something off-putting about Legolas, I can't put my finger on it. He just looks weird.

I like that they're bridging The Hobbit and LOTRs though and I think that's the reason he's in it.

When I read The Hobbit back in the day, I kept wondering if Legolas was one of the elves that dealt with the dwarves.

I mean, that is the group of elves he represented in Fellowship.

never read the book, but I assume that could be the case. because their lifespan is way long, evidently.

I'm surprised they didn't do some makeup or CGI to make Gandalf look a few decades younger, because IMO, he looks visibly older in these films vs. the LOTR.

I see this one as the underwhelming bridge between the good first and last hobbit movies. Nobody of any consequence is in any mortal danger, even the ugly 2nd in command orc guy (who's mostly irrelevant, at least it seems) gets away unscathed on his wolf-thing.

The Dwarves themselves are more of a sideshow in the movie, when it seems like they should have made them out to be characters the audience cares for, and not just a comedy act. I know Thorin is supposed to be becoming a Dbag, so they are getting that part right.

I can think of few poems that have been read more than Tell Tale Heart.

The Raven, Fall of the House of Usher and The Telltale Heart were the only ones that were hammered into us in high school.

We never read any Poe in school and whenever I read the Raven, I read it in James Earl Jones' voice.
