As I mentioned earlier in this thread, it made perfect sense that he was offered an extension along with the conditions. Smith and Webster are not stupid and would not force Munchak to coach the last year of his contract with a new coaching staff (knowing hardly anybody would want to come here). This was basically a complete do-over offered to Munchak and he didn't want it.

My point is that it was dumb to offer it in the first place. Either commit to your coach and the coordinators he wants, or cut ties completely. Don't try to come up with some kind of awkward compromise. Show some conviction.

Agreed, but loyalty runs deep in Housville (or should it be Nashton?). But at least it shows that our FO isn't stupid enough to think having a lame duck coach would work.

His loyalty would have only led us to more mediocrity. We have one of the worst group of coordinators in the league. I would have love to see Munch stay, if we had the right OC and DC to make this team successful.

To say no high profile guys would want to come here is beyond me, we have tons of young youthful talent that any coordinator would love.

If Browns could get Turner and Horton... then anything is possible

Loyal guy or not, no way Munch turns down a multi-year deal without having Penn State as a fall back. It kinda bothers me that people like Jefferson will lose their jobs just cause Munch wouldn't fire others. How loyal is it to the other guys who coached well and deserved to be retained?

For all you people calling us fake fans for wanting the Texans to beat the Titans, maybe we're just smart.

"The Titans parted ways with Munchak on Saturday. He was 22-26 in three seasons as head coach, and a coach many believed would be fired immediately after the season. In fact, it likely would’ve happened on Monday had the Titans lost the season finale against the Texans to finish at 6-10, the same mark as the previous season.
    But that wasn’t the case.
Instead, the Titans won. And conversations during the week led down a different road. The Titans offered him an opportunity to come back in 2014 and beyond, if he met certain conditions. Smith, for one, expected Munchak to take him up on the offer, especially after informing him he was agreeable to offer an extension."

Obviously Tommy Smith isn't very smart letting a win over the worst team in the league change a firing to an extension. We may be in trouble for years to come after reading that.

So how serious were the Titans about keeping Mike Munchak?

In the discussions, the team informed Munchak it would be willing to offer him a contract extension if he made changes on his coaching staff. Up to two years, I’m told.

Munchak wouldn’t do it, and the two sides parted ways.

On Sunday, the former Titans coach was already lined up for an interview at his alma mater, Penn State, according to ESPN.

The Titans parted ways with Munchak on Saturday.

Smith, for one, expected Munchak to take him up on the offer, especially after informing him he was agreeable to offer an extension.

In the wake of his team’s 7-9 finish, however, Munchak ultimately wasn’t on board with the dramatic staff changes he was informed needed to be made.

While he was offered a chance to return, he’d have to meet conditions.

Among them included parting ways with offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains and defensive coordinator Jerry Gray. Offensive line coach Bruce Matthews and linebackers coach Chet Parlavecchio, two of Munchak’s best friends, would also have to go. Indications are Munchak was told he’d have to part ways with at least a half-dozen coaches.

Munchak declined to do so, and the two sides agreed to part ways.

Munchak’s actions speak to his loyalty. He wasn’t willing to sacrifice his buddies to keep his job. He said after the season he had faith in Loggains, and axing some of his other friends wasn’t something he wanted to do either.

His decision maybe wasn’t in the best interest of some others on the staff, however, so I’m sure many of those guys aren’t especially thrilled. Coaches like Sylvester Croom (running backs) and Shawn Jefferson (receivers), for instance, joined Munchak’s staff last offseason, and had remaining years on their contract, and now they’re in limbo.

While there’s a chance they could be retained by the next head coach, it’s no guarantee. Croom’s chances are probably better because of his ties to General Manager Ruston Webster. Jefferson, who’s a really good receivers coach, is in limbo, however.

It remains to be seen if Munchak gets serious consideration for the Penn State job. Personally, I don’t think he necessarily ditched the Titans for the chance to return to his alma mater.

    Two things are clear:

–He wasn’t going to stay in Tennessee unless he could do things his way. And even with a promise of more time to fix a team in need of repairs, he wasn’t willing to do so under someone else’s terms.

–The Titans didn’t fire Munchak. He fired himself.
