Titans quarterback Jake Locker didn’t do any cartwheels when he found out he’ll be starting Friday’s preseason game at Tampa Bay. He didn’t call family and friends to tell them he’s making his first NFL start.

In Saturday’s first preseason game at Seattle, Locker replaced Matt Hasselbeck in the second quarter. Yet in preseason game No. 2, coach Mike Munchak wants to see Locker in action first.

“I wasn’t blown away by it, because I think it’s really similar to what we’ve done in practice to this point and OTAs,” Locker said Wednesday morning at Baptist Sports Park. “There’s been a rotation. There’s been one day Matt gets a lot more snaps with the ones than I do and the next day vice versa. Like I say, I don’t think it was a huge surprise.”

The way things have played out so far in training camp, Locker’s fate could very well hinge on how he plays against the Buccaneers. At the start of the offseason, coaches opened up a competition between the veteran Hasselbeck and second-year pro Locker. The 2011 first-round pick has done more than make it interesting.

Locker has arguably outplayed Hasselbeck. He’s thrown fewer interceptions in training camp practices – two, compared to Hasselbeck’s eight – and looked sharper than the veteran in Saturday’s preseason opener against the Seahawks. Locker was 7-of-13 passing for 80 yards, while Hasselbeck was 5-of-9 for 45 yards and two interceptions.

Could Locker unseat Hasselbeck with another good showing on Friday night?

“I just try to do as well as I can to lead by example and play as hard as I can. I understand I’m not perfect always, and I don’t expect you to be perfect but I expect you to give me everything you have,” Locker said. “… I’m not into stats. There’s one stat that matters. So completion percentage, all that stuff doesn’t matter to me. At the end of the day you want to win games, whether you’re completing ‘what you need to be completing’ percentage-wise or you’re just finding ways to win games, I don’t think there’s any difference between the two. So I don’t put any weight into that stuff and I never will.”

Munchak said at the start of training camp he’d like to name a starter sometime close to the third preseason game, which is Aug. 23 against the Cardinals at LP Field. The Titans wrap up their preseason on Aug. 30 against the Saints.

Hasselbeck said he’ll be rooting for Locker to play well against the Bucs.

“For me, I am just trying to stack one good day on another and learn from mistakes and try not to make the same mistake twice,” Hasselbeck said. “I am just trying to focus on the coaching I get in the meeting rooms … and just trying to focus on the short term.”

Let me put this so you can understand.

Hasselbeck. looks. the. same. now. as. he. did. this. same. time. in. 2011.

And he was 5/9, not 2/4 LOL. Why do you try so hard to make Hass look bad?

For someone who calls himself "TheSureThing", you arent very sure of anything.

I agree, I'm glad they're making a big deal about Lucks "luck" in his first nfl game. It makes it that much sweeter when he falls; then Titans deffense can taste his bitter tears. Cuck the Folts!!!!!!!!!!

GoT likes to bust chops. He hates on Derrick Morgan for going to Africa instead of staying home and rehabbing. He makes fun of Vince Young for being a diva. now knocks Kendall Wright for having a slow 40 time at the combine. GoT just likes getting on people for stuff.

Well idk about the trip to Africa but any criticism of Morgan is pretty deserved. He's been pretty pathetic for a first round pick... He's struggling to start on a line with questionable DE starters as is.
Scarecrow and nickmsmith high five this.
