You forget. If we took his contract and left it alone, we aren't on the hook for anything beyond what we are currently paying him. He got his signing bonus and his first two years guaranteed (this year is the 2nd) so this years salary is the only thing guaranteed. After that, if we cut him, we have no dead money since all the signing bonus hits SFs cap when they trade him.

If we don't like his play beyond this season, we cut him and his contract is off the books.

I trade a 3rd with the condition he starts every game. If it looks like he will sit him one game and drop the pick. That's a move Jon would make.

Considering he played 4 games last year and missed all of 2014 (I think I have the year right), unlikely they'd make that deal. Maybe a 5th and a conditional pick in 2018 depending on numbers of starts (say he has to start 12 games or more). They won't want to come away with nothing or theyd rather keep him (unless they plan on cutting him).

I think a straight up 5th round pick would get it done if they are willing to shop him and if he isn't in their long term plans. Their other line of thinking is to let him play 2017 and hope he kicks butt and THEN trade him for something good!

A 5th round pick offer would give us insight into what they are thinking.

San Fran said he wasn't being traded. Why are we still talking about it? Lol

Houston also said Tom savage is their starter, do you really belive that ends up being true? There are sometimes things you just say at certain times of the year, ie Houston.

are you that naive to buy what coaches tell the media?

come on mitch, dont be a thaky and get duped on some classic coach talk bs

OK. Let's trade for a guy that isn't on the trading block!

Why would a team publicly call a report of a trade false, while trying to trade behind the scenes? Doesn't make much sense.

The only way Savage isn't the starter is if Watson balls out in camp. That's a different scenario though.

You just answered your own question, because theyre trying to trade him behind the scenes.

Its pretty standard operations for bad teams to shop expensive vets.

Im not taking anyones word for this kind of thing when we've seen it done dozens of times before...

My point is, why not tell the media if every team in the league knows anyway? What's the secret?

Based on what the 9ers are saying, it's not true. If it is, it's a really stupid thing to lie about.
