I might haul her down to Best Buy to show her the one Preditan recommended. I don't think she'd go for an external usb.

I bought a Toshiba Satellite over 3 years ago and it has never had any problems at all. Mine is a big 17 inch screen and I use it more as a desk and rarely carry it. If I were in the market I'd consider something like this http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/pdet.to?poid=2000024944
After more conversations, I think she'd rather go with one without an optical drive and is willing to go down to 13 or 14" to lighten the load.
Try looking on Craigslist for a mac... one of my classmate bought one in bad shape for 300 and sent it in to apple for and got it all cleaned up for about 250... looks like its been refurbished .. and it only cost him less than half of what he would've gotten for a new one
Another +1 for Vaio. I've had mine for over three years and it's just started slowing down a tad in the last week or so. It got me through three years of undergrad(had a Toshiba my first year). I have a 17 inch though, so I don't know how the smaller ones handle.
