more copyright BS regarding youtube. i was using a few of his videos to learn some songs. it's much easier than looking up tabs and guess whether they're right or wrong and figuring out the timing on your own.

Shoot once you're in Open G stuff like Brown Sugar and Honky Tonk Women comes automatically...
I too dislike tabs - seems like they're always transcribed incorrectly anyway..

Tabs suck because they're written by amateur wannabes...you know, the guys who always play "Smoke On The Water" in the wrong key.

But you're not the only one affected by the ASCAP asshats:

Now, don't get me wrong: I don't mind that artists get paid for their work, and this is how they get their royalties...except that most of them don't get it because of the way the money is distributed.

The money goes to whomever is getting the most radio airplay....which, as fate would have it, happens to be bands that no longer exist.

My esteemed colleague Nathan will explain:

Is the money just pooled and distributed evenly? No...Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and Pink Floyd get the lions' share....seriously though this is not far from the truth.
ASCAP and/or BMI do not rate performance venues or do sample surveys like they do with Radio; so all license revenue from a performance venue ( like this coffeehouse) is paid out to musicians based on the radio playlist in the area. Thus if Led Zep is played 10% of the time in some city (I wasn't kidding) they get the lions share of the license money even if the venue features performers playing only Neil Young and Crowded House covers.

Hold up, dawg! That basically says "Hey, you owe us money, even though the band you're covering will never see a dime of it!", right?

What may appear unfair to you was actually one of the best ways to administer the license fees pre computer life. Tracking used to be a very difficult task...ASCAP still records about 50K hours of Radio and 40K hours of TV to monitor the honesty. But When you think about the quanity of music played each day, and the vast amount of media outlets it's played on...license fees would go up 1000% just to cover the basic cost tracking.

Still it's a bit of a silly method considering they could just require everyone to upload playlist into a Database. But then again can you imagine the size and power requirements of database that could handlejust 2500 uploads a day
( meaning there are way more than that they would need to monitor!)
