I wanted to list some players, non FAs, who could be released by their teams due to the salary cap. I thought this might lead to some further discussion about who we could go after in free agency in a couple of months.

    Jevon Kearse - $5.2M in 2007. His contract escalates at lot through 2011. 6.46, 7.72, 8.98, 10.24 in 2008-2011.

Tony Gonzalez, TE Chiefs - 4.4M in 2007

    Greg Wesley, S Chiefs - 2.7M in 2007

Patrick Surtain, CB Chiefs - 4.65M in 2007

Eric Hicks, DE Chiefs - 2.9M in 2007

Trent Green, QB Chiefs - 7.2M in 2007

Anthony McFarland, DT Colts - 5.5M in 2007

Jason Taylor, DE Dolphins - 7M in 2007

Vonnie Holiday, DT Dolphins - contract expired

Kevin Carter, DE Dolphins - 2.2M in 2007

Chris Chambers, WR Dolphins - 5.4M in 2007 (highest of his 3 remaining years)

Daunte Culpepper, QB Dolphins - 5.5M in 2007 and only goes up

Simeon Rice, DE Bucs - 7.25M in 2007

Oronde Barber - 3M each remaining year (3)

Greg Spires, DE Bucs - 4.5M in 2007

Warren Sapp, DT Raiders - 4.8M in 2007

Randy Moss, WR Raiders - 9.75M in 2007

Derrick Burgess, DE Raiders - only gets paid 1.5M this year and may want more

Al Wilson, LB Broncos - 5.2M in 2007

Rod Smith, WR Broncos - 5.5M in 2007

Ebenezer Ekuban, DE Broncos - 2.2M in 2007, last year of contract

Joe Horn, WR Saints - 4.45M in 2007

Charles Grant, DE Saints - 545K last year of contract

Casey Hampton, DT Steelers - 4.26M

Lance Briggs, LB Bears - contract expired

Donnie Edwards, LB Chargers - 4.825M in 2007, last year

Patrick Kearney, DE Falcons - 6.71M in 2007 (2 yrs left)

Rod Coleman, DT Falcons - 4M in 2007 (3 yrs left)

Keith Brooking, LB Falcons - 4.9M in 2007 (3 yrs left)

    Donavan Darius, S Jaguars - 3.5M in 2007

Kris Jenkins, DT Panthers - 3.2M in 2007, 2.955 in 08, 3.71 in 2009. He's been paid the minimum thus far in his contract.

    Mike Minter, S Panthers - 2.15M in 2007

Ken Lucas, CB Panthers - 3.2M in 2007

    Ma'ake Kemoeatu, DT Panthers - 2.4M in 2007

Well, that's enough. Around 40 is plenty. This is from about 1/3 of the teams, most of them near the bottom in terms on 2007 cap space.

Those players I wouldn't mind taking a long hard look at, should the become available. The rest are either too pricy, too old or just not good enough.

And I would maybe take the Freak back if he wasn't too too expensive. It's not like he lit the world on fire while in Philadelphia.

But what are the chances that players like Jevon Kearse, Donnie Edwards, Zach Thomas, Ray Lewis, Chris McCallister are going to get cut? You're talking about key components to defenses.

I can see Jevon maybe getting cut, but a lot of the other guys are major contributors to their teams and will most likely stay that way.

Kearney could be a victim of the new administration in Atlanta. If Burgess from Oakland is released or put on the trade block, we need to look into that. He's very good.

I want Vonnie Holliday as a DT, we need DE help too...maybe the Freak, but I doubt he's gone because its actually more of a cap hit for them to cut him.I would like Kerney or Rice, but rather have Justin Smith, or KGB.
