    An official with knowledge of the announcement says Kevin Mawae, president of the NFL Players Association, is retiring from the NFL after 16 seasons and eight Pro Bowls. Mawae has called a news conference for Friday afternoon, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the announcement had not been made yet. LINK

    I think as president of the NFL Players Association, this is a good time for Mawae to step away from the field, and focus on the leagues future.

    I really believe it's collusion amongst the owners because he is head of the NFLPA.

    There is no salary cap this year. He wants to play for one more year. He MAY not be starter material, but he would be quality backup material for any team. I'm sure some owner could afford the 2 million (or less) it would cost to have Mawae for a 1 year deal.

    It scares me that we dont have him.

    For one, I think he's better than Harris.

    And two- if Harris goes down, we're totally F**ed. Just like that our season is gone.

    I had a lot of respect for him as a player but that increased much more when I saw him help coaching a YMCA flag football team.

    This CBA issue going to stir up a lot of emotions towards him which will be misdirected. When the dust settles, I hope he gets into coaching.
