SUMMARY: According to the text of Wednesday's ruling by arbitrator John Feerick, the Titans offered QB Steve McNair a multi-year deal with a $3 million signing bonus and a base salary of $2.5 million in '06. This would have saved $6.5 million from the scheduled $23.46 million cap figure. McNairs agent, Bus Cook, countered with a deal which would have saved only $2 million. The Ravens offer to Cook was a five-year deal that would pay McNair an $11 million signing bonus and a $1 million base salary in 2006 — more than double what McNair would have received in the Titans' January proposal.

The same Steve McNair that almost retired 2 years ago is gonna play 5 more years? Im not sure how that works. He must be in debt or something.

How about a little team loyalty from Mcnair? The amount the Titans is more than enough to take care of him and his family for the rest of his life....he could do what few get to do....retire with the team that drafted him.

That would be quite an accomplishment. Just goes to show how much he means to the team.

Well, that certainly makes it clear that it was just a $ issue the whole time. I'm pretty sure McNair would be allowed to play out his 3 years with the Titans (with the 1 or 2 last as being Young's backup), but no way he plays 5 years with the Ravens.

You guys are still missing the point. The Titans' offer is basically a paycut for one year (2006) with no guarantees for 2007.

Technically, take a pay cut in 2006 and he could be released in 2007.

Guarantee? No way. I'm willing to bet there is nothing guaranteed beyond '06. But with an $11 mil signing bonus, it's still better than the $5.5 the Titans are offering. It's even better than McNairs current contract.

  10. There's nothing about a guarantee for 5 years. It's only 5 years so they can spread out the cap hit from the signing bonus as much as possible. They could cut him whenever they want.
