Yeah. The three options were:

1. Use it and get him relatively cheaply for another year.
2. Don't use it and extend him long-term without the cheap year.
3. Don't use it and let him walk.

Even Jedi JRob can figure that one out.

The other "half" of that interview is sports commentator and former NFL agent Joel Corry, who is an childhood friend of mine (Joel grew up in Nashville but now makes Vegas his home). Joel is probably the leading go-to expert in sports journalism for player contracts, especially in the NFL (Joel had NBA players under contract too in his previous career). If I'm an NFL player looking for a second opinion on a contract situation, I give Joel a call without question.

It was a good read. However, a bit a fluff "spin" piece in that the reporter didn't ask "why not sign a risky player to a one year 'prove it' contract?"

I believe that is the source of frustration many have with our not spending. I understand building with character guys and having cap reserve to extend your play making corp players but there is no cap risk in one year contracts.

And they glossed over the fail to get a WR and how that now locks us in to drafting need over BPA.

 

A ton of fluff actually

All I read was blah blah blah, re-sign your good players and build your own brand of football thru the draft. Basically what the Packers and Steelers have down for 100 years

Did Gut help them write that drawn out piece?
