Vince Young is a dynamic player who is the best running quarterback in the league today. Young makes plays with the ball in his hands that few others can and he is extremely dangerous on quarterback draws, roll-outs and especially when a play breaks down. Problem is, he really can't throw the football that well. And because of that fact, maybe it's not such a bad thing for Tennessee that Young is out for 2-4 weeks with a knee injury.
His replacement, Kerry Collins, is the complete opposite. When the initial play doesn't go according to plan for Collins, bad things usually happen. He is immobile and the very definition of a pocket passer, and he sometimes tries to do too much to make something happen. But I stress the word "passer" because Collins throws the ball well and is far more accurate than Young.
Tennessee's wide receivers might be the worst group in the league and having Troy Aikman or John Elway throwing to them probably would not change that. However, Collins is a well-above average deep thrower and Young is awful on the deep ball, so having Collins behind center should give the offense more of a vertical presence. This could also potentially open up room underneath for what the Titans do best, which is run the ball. The Titans' running game is now a two-headed beast capable of big plays behind rookie Chris Johnson or pounding an opponent into submission with LenDale White.
The passing game, with Young under center, was very tight end-centric, and also looked to Johnson as a dump-off option or in a mismatch against a linebacker. With Collins in the lineup, though, Tennessee can at least threaten to pushing the ball deep downfield. With the focus on the running game, the Titans' receivers will see a lot of single coverage which could lead to big plays. Also, with bigger wideouts like Justin Gage on the roster, Collins' ability to put a nice touch and accuracy on fades and other short goal-line type routes should help an offense that isn't particularly good in the red zone.
Collins can be mistake-prone, but his veteran presence should pay dividends. Offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger should also be able to give Collins more freedom to get out of bad play based on his pre-snap reads, and while I am certainly not ready to label Young a bust -- hard to do with the intangibles he has -- Collins is the guy who gives Tennessee the better chance to win.

What a crazy first game. We beat the Jaguars, and the main reaction is to start KFC instead of VY.

Took the words right out of my mouth.....Good post!!!

I watched every Texas game Vince Young played in and he's not a quitter like all these people are claiming. I think he is just very frustrated right now that nothing seems to be working consistently....he throws a good pass, the WR drops it, a guy seems open, he throws a good pass, the WR runs the wrong route. DE makes a great play on an INT and the crowd boos the crap out of him.

I think he feels like he's letting the team down if he's not completely successful and it's frustrating him.....he'll learn to deal with the adversity and bounce back!!! His teammates seem to have all the faith in him despite several in the fan base.

Welcome to PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALL Vince. I have no sympathy. 3 year veteran who can't keep it together. He's paid millions to perform and lead. Frustration is fine in college, not in the NFL. He's a professional now. Why do you people keep making excuses?

lol frustration isn't fine in the NFL? What fantasy world do you live in?

Frustration is a part of life, even more so when you are pressured to perform which no more evident in football than the NFL.

Frustration is fine in every day life. For those 3 hours when you are on the field "performing" keep it contained. And yes, he is performing for us. He's not paid millions to lose his composure on the field or sidelines, just as we are not paid in our jobs to lose composure in front of the boss, customers, etc.

Wow, he's like 25. How many 25 year olds have 50,000 people screaming at them if the WR (or yourself) screws up? Of course, sometimes he is going to be a little overwhelmed. If in 2 years we are still having this discussion, then yes there is a problem. For now, we just have to let the coaching staff and VY work it out.

He had more than 50,000 when he played for Texas and probably played for 15,000 plus throughout his high school days. He's used to the crowd, just not this high level of media scrutiny. He's not prepared for it and it is hurting the Titans.

After all, we are here to support and discuss the Titans, aren't we? This is not Young's private fan club.
