Read Sun Tzu's Art Of War. Most comprehensive and true application of philosophy to war (or virtually anything if you become creative enough).

    you could also read:

Zapp Brannigans' Big Book of War. (for all those Futurama fans).

although I have planned on reading the art of war.

This book is rarer, but you should also try The Book Of Five Rings. You could easily read it in 1-2 hours.
