Coty Sensabaugh has been as impressive as any cornerback in training camp so far, having come down with three interceptions.

So far, Sensabaugh has lined up almost entirely as the nickel corner, but defensive coordinator Jerry Gray said Friday that Sensabaugh has played well enough to get some looks at right cornerback – opposite Jason McCourty. Tommie Campbell and Alterraun Verner have been competing at that spot thus far.

“I think Coty’s done a great job,” Gray said. “That’s the thing about Coty. He does not just want to be a nickel. He wants to be a starting cornerback in this league, so Coty will get some reps at right cornerback, too.

“When you say you’re going to open up the competition, the guy who wants to compete is going to step up … I wouldn’t count him out as a starting right cornerback.”

Gray said if the team did move Sensabaugh outside, it would likely move Verner back to his old position in the slot.

“I know Vern can do it,” Gray said. “He did it here a couple years ago. That’s the good thing about Vern. He’s versatile.”
