Over the last 2 years he has been the most valuable non QB in the league bar none. Why should he have to play for peanuts when someone like Reggie Bush is playing on a $9M a year contract. Reggie can't carry CJ's bags!

It's not selfishness! It's responsibility! It's the basic reality that your number of years earning in this league are limited. At age 30 he could be out of the league. Why settle for less after all he has done?

He has already proven that he has elite talent. He does everything asked of him and he needs to get a deal that is more comparable to what people like Peterson and Bush are getting.

The franchise tag for a RB is $8.5M.

Offer him a a 7 year $60M deal and be done with it.

The problem with RBs and money in the NFL.

It seems to me that many RBs will sign huge money deals just before they are no longer very useful.

See the 8 year $62M deal that Shaun Alexander signed after his 1800 yard season with the Seahawks. He had nothing left when he signed that deal!

Eddie George signed a big deal just before his productivity took a dive.

Tomlinson signed a huge deal just as his productivity began to fall.

What then is wrong with signing a great player to a competitive deal that will keep him here the rest of his career? A deal when most of his career is still ahead of him?

In the long run the titans might end up saving money.

The Titans would be smart to rework his contract now while he's most serviceable to them. Putting this off a year may very well cost them more money as its a likely possibility he improves his stats from last year. If they weren't so stubborn and stuck in their ways this would be done by now. This would also be done just about anywhere else in the NFL, only the Titans are capable of blowing the best thing since sliced bread. C.J.'s situation isn't the same as anyone else before him, he's a one of a kind talent.

You think it's LIKELY that CJ will have better stats than last year? I find that very unlikely. They padded him toward the end of the season. It's unprecedented for a RB to improve on a 2k season. That's why CJ is doing this, in part. He knows he won't have another season like this past one, or at least that it's very unlikely.

As for the contract, the rules prevent giving him the contract proposed in the first post.

Note to CJ: If you want to be paid like a Superbowler, you must win a superbowl. 2,006 Yards doesn't entitle you to anything on an 8-8 squad.

We know he wants $30-$40mil guaranteed. With the 30% rule limiting his base under the current CBA, how do the Titans make it happen without paying him $25-$35mil in bonus money?

Many have pointed to the Steven Jackson contract and here's some info on that:
    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/rumors/post/Details-of-Rams-Jackson-deal-unveiled?urn=nfl,104439

In '08, he was guaranteed $20.5mil and had a $11.35 signing bonus. His contract was for six seasons ($44.805mil) but the final two could be voided by either party if Jackson rushed for 1,200 yards and had 400 yards receiving. If he reached those numbers in the first four years, the final two seasons see the base automatically increase by $3mil. This also allows the Rams to franchise him the fifth year if they wanted.

I'm sure there is some way which the Titans could do some kind of deal but the guaranteed money is the issue. In Jackson's deal, he got the $11mil SB but the rest of his guaranteed money was in his base salary. The 30% rule isn't going to allow the Titans to give CJ a base large enough without giving him a massive bonus.

Maybe that bonus can be spread out like Haynesworth's was. He got right at $11mil in signing bonus/base ($5mil/$6 mil) last year and was paid a $21mil option bonus this year. No way do the Titans go this route with the 2011 season being in question. If two seasons were added onto the extension, the guaranteed money could be spread out as bonuses in 2012 and 2014.

Any way you slice it, $30-$40mil guaranteed will be tough to reach.

So CJ wouldn't want just as much money if he ran for only 1800 yards? The 2000 yards isn't the issue except he proved he could do it (not to mention breaking the NFL record for yards form screimmage). The issue is that CJ is the best RB in the league (Peterson is watching tape of the guy to get better) and he is by far our best offensive player and most valuable player. CJ also plays a position that has the shortest life span in the NFL.

If CJ wants to be paid I'd try and work a deal that is a compromise. Get something done.

So using that logic every player on the Saints should make 10 million a year and every player on every other team should only make $500,000.

    Good logic.

Couldn't agree with you more... this has gotten far beyond ridiculous. This is how the NFL works now, this is how the players are and it's not going to change. When they perform they want to be paid for it, it's one thing if you're Andre Johnson that I find hard to swallow but CJ making less than Pearman is just unacceptable... I don't blame CJ for feeling how he does.

Again, I can't say this enough we have to make CJ happy we have to want him to be a Titan forever but the bridges are slowly continuing to burn. Sometimes you have to make the fans happy, every Titan fan is in love with CJ, everyone of us is proud we have such and amazing player, and from all accounts, he's great person off the field as well. We as fans need for CJ to play his whole career in Tennessee. Could any of you stomach the Titans organization not paying CJ what he's worth, making him upset with us and then signing with say the Colts when he's an unrestricted free agent? How would that sit with all of you because I can guarantee each day he does not have a new contract that reality creeps closer and closer?

Great post! I think most of us will agree with you when you say that we want him to remain a Titan forever. We need to let him know that we want him and appreciate his great play and production. Pay the man, show him the d@mn money!
