The debate began last season for many and now, goes into high gear entering the 2012 season. Should Matt Hasselbeck or Jake Locker be the Titans #1 QB? Coach Munchak has said it's an open competition and said he'd like to name a starter by the end of the preseason. What does Locker need to show in order to push himself ahead?

Locker needs to show an improvement in the passing game. He does have a nice deep ball and does pretty well on the run but he has to improve throwing from the pocket. He has always had accuracy issues and that doesn't matter if it's his fault, he throws it away a lot, or his WR's sucked in college it's still an issue at the pro level. He has Hass beat on most levels but the coaching staff has to be able to trust him to make the throw.

I really do think Locker should be the starter but Hass probably gets the nod. Maybe we're all under the influence of the Fisher era still but I don't truly think it's an open competition unless Hass absolutely blows up forcing Locker to start or Locker tears it up. If they're both playing evenly, it's Hass.

Locker just has to show he's able to make all the throws from the pocket. We know when he rolls out he's great deep, but what about the other areas of the field....

I do not think Locker wins the job outright, I think Hass misses time due to injury and Locker atleast plays well enough to keep the job. I suspect this happens slightly before mid season.

I agree with this completely. Hass will start and get hurt, then Locker will step in and keep the job til he retires or proves that he can't play.

I am not as concerned with his mechanics (accuracy) as I am his decision-making. Is he going to make the right reads?

Probably not every time; but hopefully he can make up for it in explosiveness.

Vince got away with it his first year, and his idea of "making a read" was reading the play off of that silly QB wristband of his.

In before this becomes a "who is better" debate between Hass and Locker.
