Apt to be slightly less popular than the thread it was based on.

I just thought I'd start up a jazz thread and do so here in Taboo (a nice kiddie free zone).

My introduction into jazz is a kind of indicative of what an arrogant kid I was when it came to music. Back in the late 70's, early 80's Rolling Stone was actually a pretty decent rag. One night I was sitting up reading some Rolling Stone record reviews and was impressed and intrigued by the review for Wynton Marsalis self title debut album. I thought to myself... I have a pretty eclectic taste in music, I'm sure I'd be able to dig this. Well I bought "Wynton Marsalis", put it on and had no clue as to what I was listening to. Stubbornly I'd occasionally throw on the album and try to decipher what the heck was going on, and although the quality of musicianship was obviously fantastic, I really wasn't feelin' it.

A few months later, undaunted, I purchased the album "Round About Midnight" by the Miles Davis Quintet. I found the album instantly more accessible, but still wasn't really getting it (when I'd listen to it, it was purposely, rather than passionately... if that makes any sense).

At that time I was going to school and working full time evenings at the parking lot of our local city hall. It was a sweet gig for someone with a lot of homework. The city hall was dead at night so I could just chill in my booth, read, listen to tunes... wash my car, whatever. The lot backed on to a rich old downtown neighbourhood with huge trees and beautiful turn of the century homes. One night while sitting outside my booth, trying to both read Frank Herbert's Dune (not sure which book) and listen to music. I just nodded my head back and listened to Miles and Coltrane go back and forth; I just immersed myself in their interplay, their juxtaposing styles... and it all clicked. It was exactly like one of those "light bulb going on" moments you see in cartoons. A personal epiphany. From that exact moment there sitting in a parking lot on a summer night I was hooked. Long story without much of a big finish, but it's always been personally cool that the moment is so crystallized for me (I've a tendency to forget such things).

Based on this I've often recommended Davis' Round About Midnight and Kind of Blue as excellent starting off points when attempting to get into jazz. It's likely not that simple though is it. I'm sure it's probably a much more uniquely personal thing.

For those that like jazz, who hooked you? Anyone have any similar experiences?

Anyways... without anymore of the ado voodoo that I do... here's the tune that was my doorway into the genre...

Already George Benson and MMW sightings (that's my fave MMW vid). Sweeeet. :)

This is a fave from Charlie Hunter (with insane performances by percussionist Chris Lovejoy and drummer Stephen Chopek).

There's no funeral like a Jazz Funeral...this one for tuba player Kerwin James in 2007.
Watch when they shake the casket, that's so the departed can have one last dance on earth.
