Rivers could be better than any QB coming out this year including Leinhart.
If we can get him for about a 7th pick why not? Also, Rivers is going to be better than any Rookie as far as being acclimated to the NFL.
For those who apparently don't understand, Brees was a pro-bowl QB last year and is a first alternate this year. The AFC has quite a few pretty darn good QBs. Just because Rivers plays behind Brees doesn't lower River's value, it actually increases it IMO.

That is a good point Soxcat - but what if Rivers costs us a 1st and another pick?

Is he worth two picks when we need the picks for other positions.

I say just trade the first and Volek for Rivers.

  3. Apparently we won't be able to trade Volek. We probably have to either give him a $4M option bonus or let him walk (that's the direction I'm leaning). Perhaps they can keep him without giving him the bonus, but that's not usually how it works...

I'm pretty sure Volek is walking no matter what in the offseason, I haven't seen any sign of the front office supporting him, and can't see him as our future #1. I'll be perfectly happy in any scenario where we can get Rivers or Cutler, even if we have to give up our first pick. I liked the logic that trading for Rivers means no signing bonus, now that's cap smart, though I guess he'd only be guarenteed for two years. IMHO, it really looks like Steve will be here, but I'd be ok with that as long as we go ahead and get our future #1 so that he can have a year with the team, maybe get some playing time if Steve gets injured or we have some meaningless games. I have less trouble with keeping Steve and starting him if we've got a longterm plan.
