The choice of Al Afalava over Aaron Francisco at one of the backup safety spots was somewhat of a surprise, but Titans coach Mike Munchak said at least a couple of factors played into the decision.

“Health became an issue there, too, as you factored that in,” Munchak said of Francisco, who missed some training-camp practices with concussion symptoms and sat out Thursday’s preseason finale with an injury.

“Al’s played every game. Aaron’s had some issues in a couple of games with injuries and couldn’t play in the last game. Some things creeped up two or three times during preseason, so that factors in.”

Munchak also said style of play was a factor, as Afalava’s forte is being a physical run-stopper. The Titans already have a couple of ground-covering safeties in Michael Griffin and Robert Johnson.

Neither Afalava nor Francisco played a game in the league last season. Afalava had played four games for Indianapolis in 2010, while Francisco had played 12 for the Colts that year.
