One of the players who won’t suit up for the Titans in tonight’s preseason opener is rookie center Brian Schwenke.

A fourth-round pick, Schwenke has been dealing with a hamstring injury. There’s no question it’s set him back in the competition for a starting spot. Munchak said the goal is to get him ready to play in the team’s next preseason game, against the Bengals on August 17.

Rob Turner and Fernando Velasco have split time working with the starters at center during training camp. Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said it would be a mistake to dismiss Schwenke as a candidate at this point, however.

“There’s still a lot of time to make that decision, and he has three weeks left to give himself an opportunity to compete for the job,’’ Loggains said.

That almost sounds like loggains thinks shmenkman "could" play, but isn't giving himself an opportunity to compete..... I don't like the sound of this.

I dunno if anything there comfy enough with him to give him a week off so he doesn't further injure himself

I had not thought of it that way. I hope you're right.

I think this is probably the case. Loggains probably thinks that he's definitely in the mix for the starting job but since its the first preseason game there is no need to rush him back, risking further injury.

I am a word guy. Words have meaning. People can be very good at crafting statements to sound one way and actually mean something totally different.

“There’s still a lot of time to make that decision, and he has three weeks left to give himself an opportunity to compete for the job,’’ Loggains said.

I guess it bothers me when loggains says he has time to "give himself an opportunity to compete". That implies that he is not currently giving himself a chance, which suggests his injured status and not playing could be by choice. The wuss factor perhaps. If he was tougher, he would be in, that type of thing.

Maybe I am reading into this more than it deserves and perhaps loggains is just not that eloquent. Either way I cannot wait to see shmenkman play. I think he will eventually have just as big, if not bigger impact than warmack.

I'm a words guy too but over the years I've realized most people use the wrong ones.

This guy will be the permanent starting C next season. Book it, he'll sit most of this season though, if not all of it.
