The Titans already had running backs Chris Johnson and Shonn Greene on the roster back in April, but on the final day of the NFL draft, they were looking to add another.

One of the players they were high on: former Vanderbilt running back Zac Stacy.

When the Rams selected Stacy in the fifth round (160th overall), the Titans opted to fill the third spot in free agency. Stacy, meanwhile, has been a hit with the Rams.

Stacy, who has started four games, is coming off a 26-carry, 134-yard performance on Monday night against the Seahawks.

“Well, he’s been great,’’ Rams coach Jeff Fisher said. “I always like to start with how he plays without the football. He’s doing a really good job in pass protection and getting to where he needs to get to as far as the route distribution stuff. He’s got great vision, and he’s a strong inside runner. It’s been a big boost to us.”

Stacy, who started 33 of 45 games at Vanderbilt, leads the Rams with 348 rushing yards, and he also had seven catches for 40 yards and a touchdown.

The 5-foot-8, 216-pounder reminds Titans safety Bernard Pollard of former NFL running back Samkon Gado.

“He is short but he is stocky, and he finds the hole,’’ Titans linebacker Colin McCarthy said of Stacy. “He is not hesitant, he comes downhill and hits the hole. He is a good running back”

Stacy missed practiced on Wednesday with an ankle injury, but Fisher said “he’s doing fine.” He has 78 rushing yards or more in three of the team’s past four games, and is averaging 4.6 yards per carry on the season.

“He is a powerful runner. He is low to the ground and he is shifty, but he is the type of runner who likes to go forward,’’ Pollard said of Stacy. “We have our hands full because I really think they are going to try and run the ball 30 times.”
