Reinfeldt: Titans will pay Collins as much as any other team

<em>Posted by ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky</em> <p> <table border="0" cellspacing="2" cellpadding="2" align="right"> <tr> <td> <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" bgcolor="#c0c0c0"> <tr> <td> <table border="0" cellspacing="1" cellpadding="1" width="100%"> <tr> <td bgcolor="#ffffff"><img src="http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nfl/players/65/734.jpg" alt="" hspace="1" vspace="1" width="65" height="90" align="left" /></td> </tr> </table> </td> </tr> </table> <font face="Arial" size="1" style="line-height: 1.5em"><font color="#808080">Collins </font> </font></td> </tr> </table> INDIANAPOLIS -- Jeff Fisher and Mike Reinfeldt addressed the assembled media here at the NFL scouting combine, and the thing that perked my ears most wasn't about free-agent-to-be <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=3543" target="_new">Albert Haynesworth</a>, it was about free-agent-to-be <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=734" target="_new">Kerry Collins</a>.</p> <p>The Titans want Collins back as their starting quarterback, but there aren't strong indications a deal will get done before free agency opens on Friday. Reinfeldt will talk to David Dunn while both are here at the scouting combine.</p> <p>But both Fisher and Reinfeldt said they believe if Collins gets to the point where he talks with other teams, he will come back to Tennessee with news of any offer and the Titans are prepared to pay up.</p> <p>I've bolded what I think may be the strongest quote about a contract that Mike Reinfeldt has offered up since becoming GM of the Titans in 2007 -- but if you follow this team you won't need the help of my added emphasis.</p> <p>"We would like Kerry back, he did a heck of a job for us last year," Reinfeldt said. "We're supposed to meet with the agent this weekend... I think he's comfortable in Tennessee, I think he likes his teammates, the coach, the city and <strong>I would think that we would be willing to pay him whatever anybody else would be willing to pay him</strong>."</p> <p>Said Fisher: "We have every intention of getting Kerry back under contract. Whether that happens by next Friday I don't know, but we'd certainly like to have it happen."</p> <p>Then, asked if he thought Collins would give the Titans a chance to match an offer from elsewhere, Fisher referred to Collins' dabblings as a country music songwriter.</p> <p>"I believe he really like it [in Nashville], he's made a second come there, he's got friends there," Fisher said. "It's hard to write songs outside of Nashville."</p>

SUMMARY: It appears Kerry Collins is heading to free agency but the Titans remain confident they'll resign him because they are willing to match any offer he receives. "I would think we would be willing to pay him whatever anybody else would be willing to pay him. So I think he would be more likely to come back," GM Mike Reinfeldt said. "We would like Kerry Collins back. He did a heck of a job for us last year. It is hard t speak for him. But I think he is comfortable in Tennessee and likes his teammates, the coach, and the city." In related news, Vince Young told Coach Jeff Fisher last week he is willing to do whatever it takes to earn back the Titans starting QB job. "He has a good frame of mind and is willing to compete," said Fisher.

That's a strange report. I wonder if he'll actually go out on the market. I'm very curious to see how this plays out.

I'm thinking it won't play out. KC had success with us last year, but not the kind of success that will raise too many GM eyebrows. He may get a marginal deal from Minnesota or Chicago, but odds are he'll be playing in TN next year for a reasonable price

our Oline made Collins look good.

i hope he dont think the grass is greener on the other side and that he will be good no matter where he lands.

Why does the team have to make statements like this? Haynesworth is the player the Titans should be cautioning other teams about signing. This is exactly the kind of crap I was afraid would happen over the offseason. Frack. Just shut up, Titans. Let the thing play out. And guys, before anyone posts about how they're doing it because they really want to wash their hands of KC, get him well paid and gracefully exited from Nashville -- I get that, angle too. It just feels kind of tacky, either way. And risky. Dicey. Oooh. (What's going to happen next? I can't look.) Worse case scenario: we got about $15M wrapped up in Scaife and Collins, when we could have had a V-Haynesworth. I know some of you are, upon further review, okay with this, but...just...eff me...eff me now.

God, I love the offseason. We're either going off the cliff, or to the top of the mountain!

Why let him reach the market? They knew at the end of last season that they wanted to bring him back but yet there going to chance him hitting the market. Fisher and MR can talk all they want about Collins loving Nashville and matching any offer but some team may very well give him a crazy deal. Anything is possible,i just hope they have a plan B incase this blows up in there face...

If we lose Collins we have no choice but to use VY. He is our future according to Fisher, so it's a no brainer we turn to Vy once again but sooner than expected.

Collins thinks he's going to get a Matt Cassel deal worth 16 million.

Titans are letting Collins see he isnt worth that much and then he will be running back to the Titans.

If we lose Collins or Simms we should bring in Leftwich.
