then why pick up Stevens when we have Crumpler? I want to see if Stevens can contribute.

Crumpler is out of contract after this year.

I think it's called planning for the future or something like that.

    Well...

Of course Stevens was all about having a player for depth who could start in the future. Crumpler was coming back from injuries and Scaife was a nice player but gonna be up for free agency...so yes.

However, Scaife wouldn't be hard to re-sign, Crumpler is under contract through next year so I don't see an immediate need to get a future player in the 3rd rnd...especially when I had Stevens rated as a 4th rnd pick.

And all this talk about him being the best blocker in the draft? He's a very good blocker at getting to second level defenders (LB's/S's) but he's not all that great blocking inline (the guy lined up on him).

And while he did run a 4.59 40, he doesn't play to that timed speed. He's not a sudden athlete. He gathers speed well...but is not quick making cuts. He runs pretty fast in a straight line, but needs a lot of work making quick cuts on patterns so he'll be able to get open.

He's a solid player no doubt, but I feel we could have spent our 3rd rnd pick more effectively. For instance, Cliff Avril is a good pass rusher who either could add some bulk and play DE as a pass rusher or we could devlop him as an OLB. Good pass rushers are always helpful. Or Mario Manningham at WR. This is a guy with 1st rnd talent but with character issues. 3rd rnd is a good place to get him cheap with limited risk. Considering we NEED a big time WR, this would have been a shot worth taking. There' afew other players we could have considered too...but you get the point.

We have a lot more issues at CB with Fuller (nickel back), King, and Carr becoming free agents than Scaife (if we got decent blocking TE later in the draft).

Now there is a great example gut! Mario manningham!

Yeah those 4 catches for a 6.5 ypc were true evidence of "suddeness". Cliff avril would look nice in a titans uniform but we drafted hayes in the next round and already had ford.

Drafting stevens made sense in many ways.

    1. He filled an immediate void left by hartstock's departure in short yardage situations where you use 3 TEs.

    2. He added insurance in case crumpler's knee didn't hold up.

    3. He provides a potential long term depth considering that scaife is a FA this year and crumpler the next.

    4. His athletic ability coupled with his blocking demonstrate the potential to maybe be a quality all around starting TE.

Being a good blocker stevens at least brought some value to the team even if he didn't develop the way they hoped as a receiver.

Had they pulled the trigger on avril for example in rd 3 what caliber TE prospect was likely going to be there in the next round? None that they liked as much as stevens but there was a DE prospect they probably liked as much as avril and that was hayes.

Nice comparison there. Henry has done nothing for this team in 2 seasons while stevens at least contributed last year. Are we to never draft any player even in the 3rd or 4th rds unless we can be absolutely certain that player will start and play like a stud from minute one?

Mason didn't start until year 4. Bust!

Bulluck and and mcnair didn't start until year 3. Super busts!

Stephan Tulluch bench warmer until year 3 POS!!!

Chris hope didn't start until the third season for the steelers. Miserable failure!

Steven's will asked to take on a bigger role this year. Wait and see how he does. His season of apprenticeship is over. He was the strongest TE in the draft and the 2nd fastest so let's see if that translates into serious value on the field.

    Lol...

Yes, it was. Funny how you use his lack of playing time and lack of stats to downplay his value, but for the rest of your post, you make the opposite claim. Now THAT is FUNNY!!!

1 - We could have signed a vet TE who can block for cheap.

2 - If Crumpler went down, we could simply go to more of a 1 TE, 1 FB instead of 2 TE's. Can also sign another TE or get/elevate Blakely if Crumpler's knee 'acted up.' Not really hard to fix.

3 - Of course he provides depth, but the point is, we didn't need to spend a 3rd rnd pick for a 3rd string TE and I'd rather bring back our top pass catcher from last year. Assuming we didnt draft Stevens and Scaife wants too much money, we could always sign a vet to be 3rd string and draft another WR this draft to work in. If the guy 'gets it' early on, you can play more 2 TE sets if you like. If he doesn't, play more FB and 1 TE sets. Problem solved.

4 - I have no doubts Stevens can be a 'quality' all around TE - whatever that means. He's a nice player...but we didn't need to draft him last year. We could also have drafted a TE later who could develop as well given the real possibility Scaife could be re-signed and Crumpler could hold up for 2 years.

    Pretty solid ones...

If they liked a TE better than Stevens, they would have drafted that guy...obviously. And how do you know they liked Hayes as much as Avril?

    Even better...

LOL...that is not the point. You wanna get depth and groom an eventual starter? Fine. But you don't draft 3rd stringers in rnd 3.

Mason didn't see the field til year 4? You're arguing a different point now...one made up by...YOU. It's not about whether Stevens starts or not...but whether or not you should be drafting a 3rd string TE when you have bigger needs!

While you're arguing apples and oranges, why don't you add in bananas and pears too...lol

If they re-sign Scaife, are we gonna be running predominantly a 3 TE formation? Stevens was tied for 3rd fastest and doesn't play to his timed speed...but whatever. We've gone through this before with Kinney and Shad Meier. How good of an investment was Meier?
