zoomed and stabilized version of the bootleg
love it around :22 when the "blue guy" leaps into the air, the light-cycle apparates and the whole crowd goes wild

as many times as I've rewound and replayed that exact moment, it's quickly becoming one of my favorite scenes in cinema

  5. Then perhaps you should rent it (and note that it is 25 year old special effects that were once ahead of it's time).

It's basically about a person who gets digitized and trapped inside a computer world (pre-internet, which I'm sure will play into the sequel).

    Okay... so...

I had a fit of nostalgia recently and rented Tron, and I gotta say that it's pretty damn funny seeing it now... no matter how "innovative" it was at the time, it's still like watching your younger brother playing Space Invaders on Atari and losing.

Besides that, it's just that the premise was so freakin' awful! ... the anthropomorphization of computer programs?? And Tron himself was the dullest, emptiest vessel of the lot. "I must contact my user!!" WTF ever....

I was actually embarrassed for David Warner in that ridiculous suit, trying to be Master Control's Himmler...especially when he did that awful acting job of expressing pain at being terminated. I can hear Steven Lisberger directing the scene: "Okay, now hold on to these handlebars, lean backwards, and pretend you're having an explosive orgasm..." For as bad as it stank, he should have changed his name to Limberger.

It was just more of Disney hacking out "cutting edge" stuff in typical Disney style, except nobody's parents were murdered in the first scene.... though their pocketbooks were only fifteen minutes beforehand. What else happened around that time? Willow? The (aptly-named) Black Hole? The Dark Crystal?

It was just like what was happening in music at the time: there was a new technology that nobody knew how to use yet, but everyone wanted to be the first one to prove that they sucked at it. Success was determined by who could pawn off the most tickets with the least amount of shame. The mere idea of a TR2N is as bad as a Frank Miller redux of Mickey Mouse's Steamboat Willie.

yeah that was a little odd, but Science Fiction has consistently provided us with outlandish ideas.
