    From colleague David Climer …

HOUSTON There was plenty of confusion — by players and officials alike — over a Houston punt early in the fourth quarter.

As Shane Lechler’s punt neared the goal line, Houston’s DeVier Posey grabbed it and flipped it backward, preventing it from going into the end zone for a touchback.

In the ensuing scrum, Tennessee’s Alterraun Verner touched the ball, which was covered by Houston long snapper Jon Weeks.

Officials at one point signaled the ball belonged to Houston. After replay, the ball was given to the Titans at the 1-yard line.

Verner said the fact that a Houston player had touched the ball meant he wasn’t at risk.

“We’re taught that once the guy on the other team touches the ball, if it’s loose it’s a live ball,” he said. “I was just trying to make a play for the team. I was sorry for the confusion but I knew what I was doing.”
