give them more than 3.5 years for one thing.

And what would killing them accomplish? It won't bring back the poor taxi driver and the American "experiment" has clearly shown that death is no deterrent to future criminals.

"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement". Corny, yes, but true none the less.

While 3.5 years is a little light, a prison sentence and social rehabilitation is a much better option, rather than just killing more people. Especially considering their age it's ridicolous to assume they can't be reformed to become perfectly healthy adults.

but do they deserve a second chance? If you send them to rehab and they get out only to kill again in 5 years who is to blame then? Society feels it has to help the people who hurt it the most. The government will spend $1,000 of dollars to give these people a second chance. You do not see the government spending $1,000 on the victim’s family. A sorry this happened and at least they will not be around for the next 3.5 years is basically all they get.

And executing them makes what difference? It's not like the state is going to give the "savings" to the victims family anyway. And whether the offenders go to jail for 3.5 years or forever or are executed won't matter to the victim's family aside from a bizarre, but unfortunately very human, feeling of justified revenge.

And imo, everybody deserves a second chance, especially at the age of 14. If we were talking about repeat offenders it would be different.

Rather than worry about the punishment for these girls, I think Australians need find out causes 14 year olds to commit murder and work damn hard to prevent it from happening again.
