I think rehabilitation means something different to you than it does to me. Rehabilitation in my view is something that happens WHILE you're in prison, not something that replaces prison.

Well in my first post I already said that 3.5 years was too soft, to which you responded "but they deserve a second chance?". To me that sounded like you disagreed that a prison sentence was warrented as opposed to capital punishment (or life in prison for that matter).

I'm not saying they're not responsible for their actions, I saying instead of worrying about lenient punishment, they should worry about preventing it from happening ever again. And it's not "normal" for 14 year olds to commit murder and unless they're proven to be clinical psycopaths, you can't claim they just happened to be "bad people". Therefore I'd be more concerned with finding out if this is a trend towards childrens de-sensitization to violence and death.

well that's your opinion, however to me murder is murder, whether it's statesponsored or not. You never have the right to take somebody else life if it can be avoided. And again we're in perfect agreement that 3.5 years it too little time both from a punishment and rehabilitation stand point.

I feel everyone deserves a second chance, provided they can be rehabilitated. In my opinion you should go to jail until a such time it's deemed you're rehabilitated and ready to be healthy part of society. Obviously the problem is that at present people are released without thought to whether they're rehabilitated or not.
While we're in the business of "what-ifs", what if the VT shooter would have gone on to find a cure for cancer or some other significantly beneficial work for humanity, would you not feel it was wrong to have him executed?
So not only do I believe it is wrong to have capital punishment from a purely ethical standpoint, I also believe it is incredibly foolish from a more logical standpoint.

The American experiment is whether using capital punishment will serve as a deterrent to future criminals, and I think it's safe to say it doesn't. The 3-strike rule is probably a better deterrent.

But you don't know that, and it will depend heavily on what the Australian prison system is like. If they're just put in a cell and otherwise left alone, no it won't change them one bit, however if they're given proper psychiatric treatment they very well might grow up to be perfectly normal adults.
And without going into a long discussion about heritage vs. environment, I don't for a second believe that the children of criminals will become social misfits, unless they're subjected to that environment while growing up.

The scary part is the way the girls seem to act. They really need psychological help, and they don't need to be back out on the streets again that quickly without some major changes.

If they're not to be executed then they should never be allowed freedom again.

The worldwide problem with the justice & penal system is that there aren't enough cells available for all the criminals that are caught.

This leads to shorter sentences & people being let out when they should stay locked up.

Let them live but use them for lab tests instead of hurting animals. I'd like to see one of those kids running around in a cage with an ear or too on their backs.

I saw that one. Half-Wits Holiday. Curleys last film. BTW the boys could not be tamed - HEREDITY RULES!

Prof. Quackenbush: How would you like to earn $1000 dollars?
Moe: Who do we have to murder?
Prof. Quackenbush: It's nothing like that. All you need to do is let me make gentlemen out of you.
Curly: Oh please no! There hasn't been a gentleman in our family for 50 generations!
    Moe: Quit bragging.

Do you really want your kids hanging out with the offspring of criminals?

I wouldn't have a problem with that at all provided we're talking about a former criminal who has been rehabilitated. And of course, the type of crime would matter as well. If someone is guilty of tax evasion I could probably care less if my kids are playing with their kids.

They deserve life in Jail that's worse than death. They should be in complete seclusion for the rest of their worthless lives what B****** I tell you.

If they brag about killing a man who had problems to begin with I mean his one arm was paralyzed but they didn't care they had no sympathy or the common sense to not murder someone. Something with them is wrong and they don't deserve to ever see the fricken light of day.
