The guy's biggest asset is his speed and frankly playing MLB it would be wasted. If he were a 3-4 OLB rushing the QB and covering TE's then that's the best way to utilize his skill set.

I personally feel he would be best used as a WILB in a 3-4. I think he could play MIKE in a 4-3, but I do agree it would take away from his skill set. What made me think of it was Wesley Woodyard sliding to ILB this year and solving a huge hole in the Broncos defense. Now, with Trevathan at WLB, Woodyard at MLB, and Miller at SLB, they actually have a solid, young LB unit. Woodyard gets washed out at times, but he brings some attributes to the table that most MIKEs can't. I had just wondered if we did slide him to MLB and Gooden developed, if that would be the thing to do. I was just trying to see what people thought but I do agree.. I feel like he could be a solid MLB, but WLB is where he can be elite.

Good observation. I like Woodyard coming out of Kentucky but he was just so undersized. Denver does run a 3-4 correct? Brown is way more athletic than Woodyard and a tad bigger so getting back to your point he could play inside in the 3-4 pretty effectively. I'd love to see what Gooden can do as well but the problem is, unfortunately, you need hamstrings to play football :(.

Actually, Denver plays a 4-3 but do show some 3-4 looks every so often. Their lineup consist of:

    LE - Derek Wolfe/Malik Jackson
DT - Kevin Vickerson (IR)/Mitch Unrein
    NT - Terrance Knighton/Sylvester Williams
    RE - Shaun Phillips/Robert Ayers
    SLB - Von Miller/Nate Irving
    MLB - Wesley Woodyard/Paris Lenon
    WLB - Danny Trevathan/Steven Johnson

Now, their defense has been pretty bad this year, but I think that has more to do with the absence of Miller for the first 6 games, Champ Bailey's injuries that have slowed him down, and guys getting banged up and missing games like Woodyard, Wolfe, and now Vickerson. I really see some similarities between our defense and theirs.

LE - Derrick Morgan - like Wolfe, stout against the run (not as stout) but offers a little more in the pass rush department.
DT - Jurrell Casey - Not nearly as big as Vickerson, but makes way more plays and is becoming one of the best DTs in the league.
NT - Sammie Lee Hill - Not quite as wide as Knighton and hasn't been as effective, but they are similar
RE - Ropati Pitoitua - Okay, no similarities here, but Pitoitua has been very solid. Wimbley more so resembles our version of Shaun Phillips.
SLB - Akeem Ayers - Brings a lot of things to the table that Miller does, just not nearly as effective. Pass rushing 4-3 OLBs are not as common as 3-4 pass rushing OLB, but they bring some versatility to the table. Ayers has underwhelmed this year, though.
MLB - Zach Brown - I think as the game continues to slow down for him, he could bring everything to our defense and more that Woodyard brings to the Broncos. You are taking, however, and elite guy and making him just solid (potentially).
WLB - Zavier Gooden - Man, I want to see this guy at work, but of course.. like everyone else on the team it seems like, injuries are slowing him down.

I'm not saying I want to be like the Broncos defense because they have been garbage this year but we have a much much better secondary than they do at this point. I just love the way they have their defense set up (two very solid coverage LBs and a defensive line that is built to stop the run because they blitz Miller due to their excellent coverage linebackers in Woodyard and Trevathan). If we could get a big NT in the first few rounds, I think we would significantly improve against the run and our DL would start eating up blockers to allow Brown and Gooden to just find the ball. Could you imagine trying to run versus Derrick Morgan (LE) Jurrell Casey (DT) Louis Nix III (NT) and Roptati Pitoitua (RE)?!?! It would take all 5 OL and a TE to consistently block those 4, then who's left to block Brown and Gooden? Sorry about the long post, just a few thinks I've been thinking about.
