yea thats really what it was about

in the event of an injury they would be dead in the water, now they have some wiggle room with their cap situation..

I said it in the Decker thread but I'll expound on it here. Look, we do have an exciting young core of WRs. I know that in the perfect world the rookies come in and get a lot of playing time and they become instant contributors and our offense doesn't skip a beat. Well, sometimes it doesn't work that way. We just went through the Sharpe saga last year going from max hype train during August to it crashing and burning less than 2 months later. Yet, here we are, already shrugging off guys like Maclin and Decker because we have two rookies that have looked good running around in shorts.

Matthews - I loved when we signed him last year. He was never utilized correctly in Miami and for some odd reason, they were very eager to push him out for younger guys who weren't guarantees. His numbers were a bit better than I thought, I guess, but I don't think his role or level has really changed much compared to this time last year. He's good but not a true WR1 talent.

Davis - he's a rookie. He was injured during the draft process and who knows if those ankle issues will pop back up this year. How big of an adjustment will he have to make? What are realistic numbers for a rookie WR? How reliable will he be out of the gate? There's a difference between getting plenty of targets and reliability, look at Sharpe's numbers. Will he hit a rookie wall?

Taylor - basically all the same questions as above with the addition that this guy looks to be strictly a slot WR. So, if you're worried about a new guy coming in and crowding our depth chart, you don't have to worry about it since Maclin and Decker play inside. Taylor will still get his snaps in 3 WR sets. Which, honestly, didn't happen a whole lot compared to the rest of the league last year.

Sharpe - I've already touched on him throughout this post. He has to prove himself before we shun proven talents away for a former 5th round pick who has a high floor but low ceiling. Is he faster? Can he get more separation? Is he totally dialed in or is he going to complain about playing time and hand out his mixtapes to fans during halftime?

tl;dr we have an exciting core but this doesn't warrant brushing off proven guys. It's all about putting Mariota in the best position to perform and win games and I don't see how you can argue not bringing in one of these guys makes us better. We have plenty of cap space and either deal would be a short term. I know we're all excited about Davis dominating in a couple years but a move like this would ease up some of the pressure on him. We would be able to afford a bit more patience with him. Hey, if we can't keep him off the field because he's tearing it up, that's a good problem to have. Wait...this was supposed to be a tl;dr version. Whoops.

    No...

Our WR5 isn't going to play. I know JC doesn't understand this but you can't have a vet in that WR5 spot that doesn't play special teams.

Yea, you better believe that Sharpe would almost be cut if that were to happen.
