BPA is the best way to go, really

but there are some times where you have to sneak in a need

not gonna take a QB or RB in the state we're in

Thank you why is this so hard to understand that deviating from BPA once or twice a draft doesn't mean you've completely abandoned drafting BPA. It still makes up the majority of your draft picks. Well it should anyway.

I'm with Gut. It doesn't make a lot of sense to call it BPA, when it often isn't. No one drafts strictly BPA, teams super rarely draft strictly by need. Everyone uses some kind of matrix of need and value.

Once or twice a draft? LOL A majority of teams draft need from the 3rd or 4th round on and occasionally draft a 'bpa' in the second half of the draft if someone falls to them they really like. So it's mostly the other way around though it's easier to find players who are closer in value in rounds 4-7 than top 5 vs top 20 and top 20 vs 2nd round caliber players. This is due to scarcity! So teams don't mind as much taking a need that's not quite as good if that player fills a starting role or vital backup or starting special teams player. They want that over a slightly better backup who won't play unless an injury happens.
