That's because my initial thoughts were that he'd be switching to a 3-4 by bringing Ryan in, but like you said they probably don't have the personnel for that. Brockers and Quinn could play 3-4. I don't know much else about their D-line. Chris Long probably wouldn't fit a 3-4.

The difference between the 2 defensive schemes is tiny anyway especially considering how often you end up in a nickel or dime package.

Alabama is a 3-4 defense but they played the 4-2-5 at least as much as their base and that means 4 linemen in a stance which is more of a 4-3 type front. Next year that might be more of their base with Sunseri a 215 lb former linebacker playing a hybrid s/wlb role.

It's all about getting your best people on the field in roles they can succeed at.

What is the preferred nickel defense in the nfl today the 3-3 or the 4-2? It's the 4-2 right? And with the 4-2 the personnel grouping is more like a 4-3 and the roles are basically a 4-3. The NT and the slower ilb comes off the field. The 3-4 ends become 4-3 DTs. The OLBs get in a stance and become DEs. A nickel back is essentially the will linebacker now playing in the right slot.

So even if you are a 3-4 scheme with perfect 3-4 personnel you will have to have the right players for that nickel package.

What I like about this thread is it didn't stop a few people from posting their "sky is falling, the Titans are doing nothing.... waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah" comments.

For a crappy D coordinator that is only known because of his name.

Hey, no matter what the stats say, fact is; Rob Ryan is 50x better than Jerry Gray.

Jerry Gray is a timid play caller, no defense can win that way...

What I like is that most people realize that Rob Ryan is not as good as the hype would lead you to beleive. Just because a guy shoots his mouth off it does not mean he is a good coach. Rob Ryan is all Hype.

On paper, Gray has had more success than Rob Ryan.

I bet Fisher is doing this as a favor to his mentor who happen's to be Rob Ryan's father. I can see no one wanting to give Rob a shot. Also, Fisher can hopfully teach Ryan the old important addage: "It's not the X's and the O's it is the Jimmys and the Joes."

The knock on Rob Ryan is that he is only concerned with focusing on his "Brilliant" sceme and pays little to no attention to player development.
