The Titans’ signing of wide receiver Kevin Walter on Monday would appear to cast plenty of doubt on the future of Lavelle Hawkins with the team, and it likely hurts Marc Mariani’s chances of returning to the roster as well.

Walter is a versatile 10-year veteran who played both in the slot and on the outside during his tenure in Houston. He’s also considered one of the better blocking wide receivers in the game.

The 31 year-old Walter isn’t going to blow past anyone on the field, but he’s still averaged 40 catches a year over the past two seasons and has done a good job of picking up first downs.

Maybe just as significantly, Walter signed his one-year deal for the league minimum, which for a player of his experience is $940,000. That’s about a million dollars less than Hawkins ($1.9 million) is scheduled to make in base salary this season, after making just five catches last year.

With Walter, Nate Washington, Kenny Britt, Kendall Wright, Damian Williams and Michael Preston currently on the roster, it’s easy to see how Hawkins could be in trouble.

The competition is also stiffer now for Mariani, who missed all of last season due to a broken leg suffered in the preseason.

With the Titans having re-signed Darius Reynaud, the team already has a very capable return specialist on the roster, which means Mariani would probably have to show real potential as a receiver — or produce some spectacular preseason returns — in order to stick. The addition of Walter means one more experienced receiver is now standing in his way.

This gif is a good expression of my feelings last year when I thought we were finally done with Hawkins, then the Front Office came in and messed everything up with a new contract for him

Mariani should not be on this team anymore. Reynaud is a much better returner.

Why is Preston still on our roster? If we're going to cut a WR, he should be the first to go. Mariani has proven himself as a returner and has more potential as a WR.. All Preston is good for is my Madden game.. 6'5 WR = rocket catches for days.
